How to Tell If a Diamond Is Real

If you’ve ever wondered whether your diamond is the real thing, you’re not alone. With lab-grown diamonds, moissanite, and cubic zirconia on the market, it can be hard to know for certain without expert help. Here are the most reliable methods — from simple home tests to professional evaluation.

The Fog Test

Hold the diamond close to your mouth and breathe on it, like you’re fogging up a mirror. A real diamond disperses heat almost instantly, so the fog will clear in one to two seconds. If it stays fogged for three or more seconds, it may be glass or a simulant.

The Float Test

Drop the stone into a glass of water. A real diamond is dense and will sink to the bottom. Many fakes are lighter and will float or sink slowly. This isn’t foolproof — some simulants also sink — but it’s a quick first check.

The Dot Test

Place the diamond flat-side down on a piece of paper with a small dot drawn on it. Look through the top of the stone. A real diamond refracts light so strongly that you shouldn’t be able to see the dot clearly. If you can see a circular reflection of the dot, it’s likely not a real diamond.

The Loupe Test

Under magnification, real diamonds typically have inclusions — tiny natural imperfections that formed during growth. Perfectly flawless stones, especially inexpensive ones, are often synthetic or fake. A trained eye with a jeweler’s loupe can spot the difference quickly.

UV Light Test

Under ultraviolet (black) light, many real diamonds emit a blue fluorescence. However, not all diamonds fluoresce, and some fakes do as well, so this test is a clue — not a conclusion.

The Most Reliable Method: Professional Testing

None of the at-home tests above are definitive. The only truly reliable way to confirm a diamond’s authenticity is through professional gemological testing using tools like:

  • Thermal conductivity testers — diamonds conduct heat uniquely
  • Electrical conductivity testers — useful for distinguishing diamond from moissanite
  • Spectroscopy — identifies the stone’s exact chemical composition

At Edward Jewels & Watches, we use professional-grade gemological equipment and decades of experience to identify stones accurately. Whether you inherited a piece, bought something secondhand, or just want peace of mind, bring it in and we’ll tell you exactly what you have — no pressure, no charge for the conversation.
