5 Signs Your Jewelry Needs a Cleaning or Check-Up

Dull shine, cloudy stones, or a sticky clasp? Here's how to recognize when your jewelry is overdue for a professional cleaning and inspection.

5 Signs Your Jewelry Needs a Cleaning or Check-Up

Most people know they should clean their jewelry regularly, but it’s easy to let it slide. The problem is, jewelry that looks dull may also have hidden issues — loose prongs, weakened clasps, or buildup that’s damaging stones over time. Here are five signs it’s time to bring your pieces in.

1. Your Diamonds or Gems Look Dull or Cloudy

Diamonds and gemstones are natural light collectors, but everyday exposure to hand lotion, soap, and oils creates a film that blocks light from entering the stone. If your diamond used to sparkle and now looks flat or hazy, that’s almost certainly a buildup problem that a professional cleaning will fix — often dramatically.

2. Your Metal Looks Dark or Discolored

Gold, silver, and platinum can all tarnish or oxidize over time. Silver in particular reacts with sulfur compounds in the air and on skin, turning dark gray or black. While some oxidation is natural for certain finishes, unexpected darkening on gold or platinum usually means it’s time for a professional polish.

3. The Clasp Is Sticky or Hard to Open

A clasp that’s become difficult to operate — sticky, stiff, or unreliable — often has buildup in its mechanism. Left unaddressed, a failing clasp will eventually cause you to lose the piece entirely. A professional cleaning and clasp inspection can catch this before it becomes a loss.

4. You Can See Buildup Under the Setting

Look at the underside of any stone settings on your rings or earrings. If you can see a grayish buildup around the prongs or inside the bezel, your stone is sitting in grime. Beyond looking bad, this buildup can make it harder to detect loose prongs — which is one of the main ways center stones get lost.

5. It’s Been More Than a Year Since the Last Cleaning

Even if your jewelry looks fine, annual professional cleanings are a smart habit. Our cleaning process includes a full inspection of prongs, settings, clasps, and chain links — not just the sparkle. We catch small problems before they become expensive ones, and your pieces leave looking like new.

How Often Should You Clean Your Jewelry?

  • Daily-wear rings (like engagement rings): Every 6–12 months
  • Occasional pieces: Once a year or before a special event
  • Fine necklaces and bracelets: Annually, or when you notice discoloration

At Edward Jewels & Watches, professional cleaning includes a thorough inspection at no extra charge. We’ll let you know about any prongs, settings, or structural issues that need attention before they become a problem.
